Cytogenetic Study of Allium cepa Root Tip Cells treated with Textile Effluent
Abstract
The aim of the present study is to focus on the chromosomal aberrations observed in Allium cepa root tip cells treated with textile effluent. In this study different concentrations of textile effluent (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100%) were taken in couplin jar and onion bulbs were placed on top of it. The observation showed that textile effluent induced mitotic cell division showed chromosomal abnormalities like sticky chromosomes at metaphase, tail projection, laggard chromosomes, bridge at metaphase, binucleolar cells and disturbed chromosomes at metaphase. Sticky chromosomes were most commonly found in all concentrations of textile effluent. Mitotic index decreased with increase in concentration of the effluent.
